  1. What is the burning layer made of? Is it Flash paper?
    No. It is not flash paper. The burning layer is made of edible starch. It burns fast and leaves minimal residue/soot
  2. After burning away the starch layer, is it safe to consume soot and the outer layer which was exposed to fire?
    The soot left over after burning the starch layer is minimal and it is safe to consume same as the soot generated by direct fire cooking like barbecuing. The question is whether you like the taste and texture of the soot. If you don’t like you can easily peel of the layer which was exposed to fire.
